Ross Pospisil And Osei Asante Elected 2009 Football Team Captains

ANNAPOLIS, Md.- Navy head football coach Ken Niumatalolo announced Friday night at halftime of the spring football game that linebacker Ross Pospisil (Temple, Texas) and guard Osei Asante (Houston, Texas) have been elected team captains for the 2009 football season by their teammates.

"It's a great honor for Ross and Osei to be elected team captains by their teammates and I know they will do a great job" said Niumatalolo. "They have performed well during spring practice and they have emerged as two of our best leaders. I am confident that they will provide great leadership on the field, in the classroom and in Bancroft Hall.”

Pospisil was a starter in all 13 games a year ago and led the Midshipmen with 106 tackles, including 64 solo stops. He recorded three tackles for a loss, broke up four passes, forced three fumbles, recovered two fumbles and intercepted two passes. He finished the year recording double-figure tackles in each of the final five games of the year, including a team-high 13 tackles against Wake Forest in the EagleBank Bowl. Pospisil was involved in two of Navy’s biggest plays of the year, stepping in front of a Mike Teel pass with 56 seconds remaining in the game to preserve Navy’s 23-21 upset of Rutgers and then causing a fumble that Clint Sovie returned for a touchdown with 37 seconds remaining in the game that allowed Navy to tie Temple at 27 and send the game into overtime. The Mids went on to win the game in overtime, 33-27, in what has been dubbed the “Miracle at Navy-Marine Corps.”

Asante played in every game at guard last fall and has emerged as a starter at left guard this spring. He saw extensive action in Navy’s 34-0 rout of Army, replacing an injured Anthony Gaskins in the first quarter and helped open up running lanes for the senior tandem of Shun White (13-148) and Eric Kettani (24-125). Asante and the rest of the offensive line helped Navy lead the nation in rushing for a record fourth-consecutive season (292.4).
