Oscar Peterson and Allen Sherman

I love music but rarely listen to the radio or even the stereo. Until now.

I created a radio station guaranteed to clear a room at www.slacker.com - it plays nothing but:

Allen Sherman
Antony and the Johnsons
Art Tatum
Don McLean
Dory Previn
Ella Fitzgerald
Fats Waller
Jackson Browne
Jeff Buckley
Jelly Roll Morton
Joan Armatrading
John Hartford
John Prine
Joni Mitchell
Judy Garland
Laura Nyro
Leon Redbone
Leonard Cohen
Lily Tomlin
Louis Armstrong
Maria Muldaur
Martha Wainwright
Mitch Hedberg
Nina Simone
Nora Jones
Oscar Peterson
Phoebe Snow
Randy Newman
Rufus Wainwright
Sarah Vaughn
The Mills Brother
Thelonius Monk
Tom Waits
Willie Nelson

You can tell Slacker when your favorite songs are on and those will play more frequently in the future. In the reverse, you can tell Slacker if an artist you like sings a song you hate and that song will play no more.

And now there's a portable Slacker radio. The online version is free. The portable version costs money.

Slacking in Shaker,

Carolyn

I need to listen to some of your artists. I've seen Norah Jones, Willie Nelson and Tom Waits in concert. I've listened to half of these artists very casually. Which artist would you suggest I check out first?

I saw Rufus Wainwright in concert last summer; that would be my first stop. Jeff Buckley second. John Hartford third. Art Tatum fourth.

I've always wanted to see Tom Waits in concert. Details, please.

I've attended the Bridge School Benefit Concert in Mountain View, California for the last 12 years. It's a benefit concert held by Neil Young to provide for a disabled children's school. He invites 6-8 artists to play an acoustic set. Tom Waits was at the show one year and was amazing. His passion really comes through when he is performing on stage.

Interesting. John Hartford is also passionate in concert; humming and stomping his foot on an electric board.

Do you know David Bromberg? I saw him at Rutgers years ago. He played in the student center, acoustic set, no one showed up - one of the best nights of my life.

I'll give Wainwright and Buckley a better listen this time around. I haven't heard of John Hartford or David Bromberg
