Tennessee Titans Free Agency Grade and Review

Contributor - Drexel Perry, mvn.com/nfl-titans

Team Needs - WR, DE, G, TE, RB

Key additions - TE Alge Crumpler (Atlanta), DE Jevon Kearse (Philadelphia), G Jake Scott (Indianapolis), WR Justin McCareins (N.Y. Jets)

Key Losses - G Jacob Bell (St. Louis), DE Antwan Odom (Cincinnati), DE Travis LaBoy (Arizona)

Key Free Agents Retained - DT Albert Haynesworth (Franchised) WR Justin Gage (Re-Signed)

Free Agency Notes - Heading into the offseason, securing the services of a bona fide playmaker was #1 on the Titans agenda. Picking up Alge Crumpler was a step in the right direction, as he will provide the team with its best TE since the days of Frank Wycheck.

Re-signing Gage was a good move and the hope is for former Titan Justin McCareins to flourish in Mike Heimerdinger's offense once more.

The departures of Odom, LaBoy and Bell forced the Titans to make moves to replace them. "The Freak" Jevon Kearse was brought back into the fold to help replace the losses at the DE position. Instead of overpaying to retain the services of Jacob Bell, the Titans decided to partake in their annual raiding of the Indianapolis Colts' roster by signing Jake Scott to start at guard.

Grade - B

Review of Grade - Scott was a good signing and it was a coup to pick up veterans Crumpler and Kearse at bargain prices. The only disappointment thus far is the failure to bring in an elite talent at WR, but the team will probably address this position in the draft. The draft is also where the team will look to pick up some additional depth on the defensive line.

Thousands gather to honor McNair's accomplishments on and off field

Steve McNair's family, friends, former teammates and coaches gathered Thursday night along with thousands of fans to remember the slain ex-NFL quarterback's accomplishments on and off the field.

Fans wanting to pay their respects to former NFL quarterback Steve McNair can do so at the stadium where he created so many memories. The Tennessee Titans are opening LP Field on Wednesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., so fans can honor McNair.

Steve McNair is already in the Hall of Fame

I hadn't planned to write much more about the passing of Steve McNair but have had a change of heart, wanting to share some moments from his funeral earlier this evening.

"Highlights" may not sound appropriate, perhaps even bordering on the macabre, but it was a celebration of his life. Several speakers said Steve had scored a final touchdown.

Derrick Mason spoke of his love for Steve and finished his comments by thumping his chest and pointing to the heavens.

Likewise, Eddie George spoke of love, for Steve and all his teammates. He also said people asked him if Steve would someday be in the Hall of Fame. Eddie drew resounding applause when he said Steve was already there. Eddie finished by reading a poem he had composed about Steve, about warriors.

Saying goodbye to Mac9

Three writers, three similar but different perspectives.  Unlike Drexel, I never met Steve McNair in person.  Unlike Andrew, actually getting to see Steve (or, for that matter, the rest of his teammates) play was a rare experience-living outside the Nashville area, in NFC markets, and without Sunday Ticket, the Titans actually being on TV was a pleasant but disappointingly irregular event.  No, on Sunday afternoons I tended to be glued to the computer, listening to Mike Keith and Pat Ryan or later Frank Wycheck on Titans Radio.

My experience meeting Steve McNair

I'll be honest: It's still difficult to put into words coherent thoughts and feelings towards the untimely passing of the Tennessee Titans' beloved former signal-caller Steve McNair.

As Andrew alluded to in his most recent article, not only was #9 a heck of a quarterback, but he will also be remembered for his kind acts demonstrated by his commitment to humanitarian causes.

Last year, during my only experience meeting Steve McNair in person, I witnessed up close and personal both of the aforementioned qualities that made him such a beloved figure in the city of Nashville as well as in the circles of NFL fandom.
