St. Louis Rams Free Agency Grade and Review

Contributor: Hal Schaeffer, mvn.com/nfl-rams

Team Needs: OL, DE, WR, CB, QB, SLB

Key additions: K Josh Brown (Seattle), OG Jacob Bell (Tennessee), QB Trent Green (Miami),WR Reche Caldwell (Washington), TE Anthony Becht (Tampa Bay)

Key Losses: SLB Brandon Chillar, K Jeff Wilkins, WR Isaac Bruce

Key Free Agents Retained: OL Adam Goldberg (Re-Signed), DE James Hall (Re-Signed), C Brett Romberg (Re-Signed)

Free Agency Notes: The Rams had multiple needs to address after their disastrous 3-13 2007 season. Primary among those needs was upgrading and acquiring more depth for the injury-riddled offensive line and bolstering the pass rush. In addition, a replacement had to be obtained for the retired Jeff Wilkins, a number 3 WR was needed, and depth issues at LB and CB had to be addressed. Both Jay Zygmunt and coach Scott Linehan promised that the Rams would be aggressive in free agency so that the team could be more competitive in 2008. The team quickly replaced Wilkins by signing Ram-killer Josh Brown from division rival Seattle, giving the team an experienced, accurate kicker in a move that surprised many observers. The acquisition of OG Jacob Bell represents a huge upgrade for the offensive line, and the re-signing of Adam Goldberg, Brandon Gorin, and Brett Romberg assures depth going into training camp. Signing Becht also brought a solid blocker into the line. However, the Rams will still be in the market for help at OT to insure against injuries to Orlando Pace and Alex Barron. Reche Caldwell has been brought in to compete with Derek Stanley, Dane Looker, and Marques Hagans in the WR mix, which sustained the loss of the great Isaac Bruce. Although Rams coaches believe that the hole created by the movement of SLB Brandon Chillar to the Packers can be filled by either Chris Draft or Quinton Culberson, depth is needed at the LB position. The always uncertain status of CB Fakhir Brown creates a need at that position as well and has prompted speculation about a trade for the Eagles' Lito Sheppard. Look for the Rams to continue to scan the wires for cuts from other teams to bolster their roster even further.

Grade: B

Review of Grade: The Rams cautiously and thoughtfully approached a limited free agency market and were able to fill some key needs and address some depth issues. This will allow them to focus on their remaining needs more sharply in the draft.

News of the Bye Week

Lest We Not Forget

The Saints are a really good football team.  The Rams are not.  A lot has been forgiven, Rams fans, during the Rams “win streak” (2 weeks in a row without a loss!), but let’s not forget the previous 7 excruciating games.  The Saints have a high-powered offense and run 4 top-flight WRs on the field.  [...]
