San Francisco 49ers Free Agency Grade and Review

Contributor: Samuel Lam, mvn.com/nfl-49ers

Team Needs: DL, OL, LB, WR

Key additions: WR Bryant Johnson (Arizona), LB Dontarrious Thomas (Minnesota), RB DeShaun Foster (Carolina), KR Allen Rossum (Pittsburgh), WR Isaac Bruce (St. Louis), DE Justin Smith (Cincinnati)

Key Losses: WR Darrell Jackson, G Justin Smiley (Miami), QB Trent Dilfer, DE Marques Douglas (Tampa Bay), LB Derek Smith (San Diego)

Key Free Agents Retained: CB Donald Strickland (Re-signed), TE Billy Bajema (Re-Signed), NT Isaac Sopoaga (Re-signed), QB Shaun Hill (Re-signed)

Free Agency Notes: With the retirement of Bryant Young and Larry Allen, the Niners look to fill in the voids immediately. Getting Justin Smith adds a seasoned veteran to help out the defensive line. For the offensive line, Justin Smiley's departure adds a bigger role for Joe Staley to step up. Since the Niners did not grab any big offensive linemen in free agency, look for the draft to be a place for them to go. DeShaun Foster will become a great backup for the injury-proned Frank Gore. Allen Rossum will become a very key part in the team's effort to establish great field position in kick returns. The biggest question for the team was at the wide receiever spot, and the Niners took care of that by grabbing division rival foe Bryant Johnson.

Grade: A-

Review of Grade: The team did pretty much everything they needed to do. Being one of the most active teams in the market, the Niners covered a lot of holes on the roster. They have given themselves a great foot up for the upcoming season, not relying heavily on the draft to build themselves back up in the NFC West.

Favre considers return to NFL or does he?

Brett Favre dismissed an ESPN report that he's considering coming out of retirement as "all rumor." Favre responded Wednesday to the ESPN report by telling his hometown newspaper Web site, SunHerald.com in Gulfport, Miss., that "it's all rumor." The paper...

Former Chargers linebacker Steve Foley agreed Wednesday to settle his lawsuit against a police officer who shot him while off-duty two years ago and ended his pro football career. Foley's attorney, Harvey Levine, said the settlement was reached with Officer...

Rookie pay has been out of scale

What do a 69-year-old Spanish men's soccer coach and the 20-year-old woman who upset Maria Sharapova have in common? They provided two of the more satisfying and amusing moments of the last week in sports. We'll get back to them in a bit, after giving a...

Fullback Assessment

Apologies for my grammatical errors and thanks for catching them. One other note about the team's release of two players on Tuesday. The 49ers are one man over the 80-man limit, meaning they should release another player some time soon, and several players once they start signing their draft...

RB Assessment

Before we get to the running backs, here are a few responses to Monday's posts. Stillpan4gold had an interesting read on the quarterback assessment when he wrote about expectations. Alex Smith was looked upon as coming from the same lineage of Montana, Young even Garcia. The team even...

Two Players Cut

The pride of San Jose State, tackle John Booker , was released by the 49rs along with linebacker Shaun Richardson . Booker a 6-4, 315-pounder, who played left and right tackle with the Spartans, might have been let go to make room for Barry Sims . Does the Richardson release mean the team is...

We’re sorry to see Vince and Erik go, and wish them much luck. Meanwhile, the Mercury News expects to launch a staff blog on the 49ers very soon. We’re also considering whether to continue this fan blog. If you follow the Niners and think you have something to say about their prospects, their...

Bloggers no more

I started this blogging gig two years ago, just before the 2006 season.  I must’ve posted 80 or so articles.  It has been great fun, but it’s time to call it quits.  For one thing, after going back over what I’ve written, I realize that I’m starting to run out of things to...

Boring is not necessarily bad

Far be it from me to criticize the 49ers for passing on skill players and focusing on the offensive and defensive lines in this year’s draft.  Those who bother to read this blog with any regularity have heard me say over and over that the offensive line is the most important unit in...

49ers will take QB competition to training camp

Alex Smith is still in competition with Shaun Hill for the top role in Mike Martz's offense, and nearly three weeks of minicamp haven't done much to produce a favorite, at least according to Martz and coach Mike Nolan.

Happy Independence Day Niners fans!

Happy Independence day guys! I don’t know if this is like one of those things that you say “Happy Independence Day” to your friends. It’s not like New Years or Christmas. You don’t really say it. It’s just an understanding that this country is still around and allowing us to be free. I’m glad to be [...]

How much better will Mike Martz make the 49ers offense?

I had initially thought about doing a post about the different elements of the 49ers offense for Mike Martz, but I came across this article and it made me rethink about the whole 49ers offense in general. First off, this article talks about how the 49ers offense may not be talented enough to handle a Martz [...]

Uniform trends the 49ers need to avoid in 2010 Pt. 1: Helmets

OK, well it’s another uniform post. The last one had a pretty neat discussion. Check it out. Anyway, as you may know, the 49ers will actually be trying to get new uniforms in 2010. From the consensus from many of you, a look that is reminiscant of the 1980s seems to be the best choice. However, [...]
