San Francisco 49ers Free Agency Grade and Review

Contributor: Samuel Lam, mvn.com/nfl-49ers

Team Needs: DL, OL, LB, WR

Key additions: WR Bryant Johnson (Arizona), LB Dontarrious Thomas (Minnesota), RB DeShaun Foster (Carolina), KR Allen Rossum (Pittsburgh), WR Isaac Bruce (St. Louis), DE Justin Smith (Cincinnati)

Key Losses: WR Darrell Jackson, G Justin Smiley (Miami), QB Trent Dilfer, DE Marques Douglas (Tampa Bay), LB Derek Smith (San Diego)

Key Free Agents Retained: CB Donald Strickland (Re-signed), TE Billy Bajema (Re-Signed), NT Isaac Sopoaga (Re-signed), QB Shaun Hill (Re-signed)

Free Agency Notes: With the retirement of Bryant Young and Larry Allen, the Niners look to fill in the voids immediately. Getting Justin Smith adds a seasoned veteran to help out the defensive line. For the offensive line, Justin Smiley's departure adds a bigger role for Joe Staley to step up. Since the Niners did not grab any big offensive linemen in free agency, look for the draft to be a place for them to go. DeShaun Foster will become a great backup for the injury-proned Frank Gore. Allen Rossum will become a very key part in the team's effort to establish great field position in kick returns. The biggest question for the team was at the wide receiever spot, and the Niners took care of that by grabbing division rival foe Bryant Johnson.

Grade: A-

Review of Grade: The team did pretty much everything they needed to do. Being one of the most active teams in the market, the Niners covered a lot of holes on the roster. They have given themselves a great foot up for the upcoming season, not relying heavily on the draft to build themselves back up in the NFC West.

High praise for 49ers' nose tackle

Earlier in the season, defensive end Justin Smith said emphatically that teammate Aubrayo Franklin was the best nose tackle in the NFL. "Tape don't lie," Smith said at the time. Several weeks later, the only thing that has changed is Smith's grammar. "Tape...

49ers an experiment behind Smith

As unsightly and discouraging as the 49ers' win over the Bears looked Thursday night, it represented a fulfillment of Mike Singletary's vision for this team. A 10-6 win that ended a losing streak, saw Frank Gore rush for 104 yards and produced five...

Prejudice shouldn't stand

Scott Ostler , my esteemed colleague on the newspaper side, awarded the NFL the Knucklehead of the Week for their menu of fines that included one for a drooping sock, ($5,000) and another for wearing a college cap on the sidelines, $25,000. Ostler compared that to $5,000 for roughing the...

Bruce benched

Coach Mike Singletary announced at his weekly news conference that Josh Morgan will supplant Isaac Bruce as the starter at wide receiver. Bruce sprained his ankle weeks ago and then rolled that ankle Tuesday in practice and missed Thursday night's 10-6 win over the Bears. Singletary said...

Post Game

Vernon Davis said all is good with Bears defensive end Adewale Ogunleye . He got into a tiff with him before the game, which is something he initiated. He told Ogunleye, "You better be ready" And he said, Ogunleye said the same thing to him. Davis got the better of him on during the game, with...

Jimmy Raye? Say it ain’t so!

Wow! I just saw both Matt Maiocco and Matt Barrows reporting that the 49ers have already, or are in the process of signing up Jimmy Raye II as their offensive coordinator. That was enough for me to “come out of retirement” (or at least, mothballs) to make an urgent plea to Mike...

Linehan Seriously?

Ok Scott Linehan came back for a second interview. What is this all about? I thought the 49ers had their fill of X-Rams coaches when they fired Martz. Linehan runs the same system as Martz, but he is not Martz. So what gives? I am not a HUGE Martz fan, [...]

Morgan will start over Bruce at WR, 49ers coach Singletary says

Isaac Bruce's ankle injury kept him out of Thursday night's game. It also might have cost the San Francisco 49ers wide receiver his job.

Take your pick: 49ers come up with five to hold off Bears for 10-6 win

Frank Gore ran for 104 yards and a touchdown, Jay Cutler threw a career-high five interceptions with his last coming in the end zone on the game's final play and San Francisco snapped a four-game losing streak by beating the Chicago Bears 10-6 on Thursday night.

Niners WR Bruce sidelined vs. Bears because of injured ankle

The San Francisco 49ers didn't dress veteran wide receiver for Thursday night's game against the Chicago Bears because they wanted him to rest his injured ankle, league sources told NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora.

49ers intercept Cutler 5 times; hold on to 10-6 win

With :08 remaining in the game and the Chicago Bears driving to score the game-winning touchdown, Bears quarterback Jay Cutler threw his fifth interception of the game right to the hands of San Francisco 49ers safety Michael Lewis. The interception ended the 49ers’ four-game losing streak and gave the team hope for the remainder of the season after the 10-6 win. “We a took a step, that’s the most important part,” Lewis said after the game. At 4-5, the 49ers have given themselves the op...

Week 10: San Francisco 49ers vs. Chicago Bears

Desperation, must-win, however you want to look at this game, that's what it is. With a four-game losing streak and a load of inconsistency, the 49ers are seeing their playoff hopes slip away. After a four-turnover performance against the Titans last Sunday, the 49ers had a short week to prepare for hte Chicago Bears. The Bears defense has struggled recently and the 49ers need to take advantage of that. But given how head coach Mik Singletary continues to promote the better days of the...

Davis on Bears defense: ‘I think we can destroy their front’

Head coach Mike Singletary has shown confidence in his team despite the four-game losing streak. On Tuesday, tight end Vernon Davis, one of the team captains, said the 49ers offense can take on their opponent on Thursday. (You can watch the video right here.) "I think we can destroy their front," said Davis. "The guys up front, I think we can destroy them. I don't see anything spectacular about their front line. Their linebackers, I think we can handle them pretty well. I like (Adewale) Ogunl...
