San Francisco 49ers Free Agency Grade and Review

Contributor: Samuel Lam, mvn.com/nfl-49ers

Team Needs: DL, OL, LB, WR

Key additions: WR Bryant Johnson (Arizona), LB Dontarrious Thomas (Minnesota), RB DeShaun Foster (Carolina), KR Allen Rossum (Pittsburgh), WR Isaac Bruce (St. Louis), DE Justin Smith (Cincinnati)

Key Losses: WR Darrell Jackson, G Justin Smiley (Miami), QB Trent Dilfer, DE Marques Douglas (Tampa Bay), LB Derek Smith (San Diego)

Key Free Agents Retained: CB Donald Strickland (Re-signed), TE Billy Bajema (Re-Signed), NT Isaac Sopoaga (Re-signed), QB Shaun Hill (Re-signed)

Free Agency Notes: With the retirement of Bryant Young and Larry Allen, the Niners look to fill in the voids immediately. Getting Justin Smith adds a seasoned veteran to help out the defensive line. For the offensive line, Justin Smiley's departure adds a bigger role for Joe Staley to step up. Since the Niners did not grab any big offensive linemen in free agency, look for the draft to be a place for them to go. DeShaun Foster will become a great backup for the injury-proned Frank Gore. Allen Rossum will become a very key part in the team's effort to establish great field position in kick returns. The biggest question for the team was at the wide receiever spot, and the Niners took care of that by grabbing division rival foe Bryant Johnson.

Grade: A-

Review of Grade: The team did pretty much everything they needed to do. Being one of the most active teams in the market, the Niners covered a lot of holes on the roster. They have given themselves a great foot up for the upcoming season, not relying heavily on the draft to build themselves back up in the NFC West.

Drops, not catches, occupy Crabtree's thoughts

Four games into his rookie season with the 49ers, Michael Crabtree is contributing nicely with 18 receptions for 215 yards. But it's the two passes he's dropped thus far that keep the wide receiver up at night. Crabtree dropped a pass at Indianapolis and...

49ers can even record with win over Packers

Despite his skill as a motivational speaker, Mike Singletary often resorts to platitudes when talking about the upcoming game being the most important one of the season for the 49ers. In this case, he's spot-on. "As far as the importance of the game, this...

Does a 4-3 make sense?

Early in the season, when the 49ers were rolling up wins, they played teams with injury problems. Seattle, Arizona, St. Louis were all missing key players when they encountered San Francisco. Now the 49ers are facing teams returning to health, including the Packers this Sunday in Green Bay. ...

Jimmy Raye? Say it ain’t so!

Wow! I just saw both Matt Maiocco and Matt Barrows reporting that the 49ers have already, or are in the process of signing up Jimmy Raye II as their offensive coordinator. That was enough for me to “come out of retirement” (or at least, mothballs) to make an urgent plea to Mike...

Linehan Seriously?

Ok Scott Linehan came back for a second interview. What is this all about? I thought the 49ers had their fill of X-Rams coaches when they fired Martz. Linehan runs the same system as Martz, but he is not Martz. So what gives? I am not a HUGE Martz fan, [...]

49ers, Packers looking to capitalize on recent wins

Looking for a spark in the second half of the season, the Green Bay Packers and San Francisco 49ers have been rejuvenated after recording much-needed victories last week.

Morgan will start over Bruce at WR, 49ers coach Singletary says

Isaac Bruce's ankle injury kept him out of Thursday night's game. It also might have cost the San Francisco 49ers wide receiver his job.

Take your pick: 49ers come up with five to hold off Bears for 10-6 win

Frank Gore ran for 104 yards and a touchdown, Jay Cutler threw a career-high five interceptions with his last coming in the end zone on the game's final play and San Francisco snapped a four-game losing streak by beating the Chicago Bears 10-6 on Thursday night.

49ers league-leading scoring efficient offense need to capitalize against Packers

While reading the media press release on this Sunday's 49ers-Packers matchup, I came across an interesting fact. Despite the 49ers' inconsistent offensive struggles (are they a passing team or a running team?), they do lead the NFL in one very important category: Scoring efficiency. Scoring efficiency is calculated upon the opportunities in which a team enters the opposition's 30-yard line. The efficiency rate is determined by the percentage that the team will score on that particular driv...

Alex Smith and Aaron Rodgers: Revisiting the 2005 NFL Draft

49ers general manager Scot McCloughan had already made a decision to select Alex Smith with the #1 overall in April 2005. Head coach Mike Nolan decided on Smith as well upon his arrival. And with the first pick, the 49ers selected the quarterback out of Utah to help bring team relevance back to the Bay Area. Aaron Rodgers decided to not return to Cal for one more season and enter his name into the draft. In a very weak draft class, many draft experts said that Rodgers had more "football-ready...

49ers intercept Cutler 5 times; hold on to 10-6 win

With :08 remaining in the game and the Chicago Bears driving to score the game-winning touchdown, Bears quarterback Jay Cutler threw his fifth interception of the game right to the hands of San Francisco 49ers safety Michael Lewis. The interception ended the 49ers’ four-game losing streak and gave the team hope for the remainder of the season after the 10-6 win. “We a took a step, that’s the most important part,” Lewis said after the game. At 4-5, the 49ers have given themselves the op...
