Philadelphia Eagles Free Agency Grade and Review

Contributor: Justin Harris, mvn.com/nfl-eagles

Team Needs: OL, S, WR, DE/LB, RB

Key additions: CB Asante Samuel (Patriots), DE/LB Chris Clemons (Raiders), FB Dan Klecko (Colts), LB Rocky Boiman (Colts)

Key Losses: LB Takeo Spikes, CB William James

Key Free Agents Retained: TE LJ Smith (Franchised), CB Joselio Hanson (Tendered)

Free Agency Notes: It seems every off-season there's at least one week long headline highlighting Donovan McNabb. This time it was his statement that the Eagles needed more "playmakers". For the first time, it seemed like the Eagles front office actually listened to the man who has brought them so much success. The only problem? No one is willing to give them the playmakers they want. They nearly had a lock on Randy Moss, but he decided to settle back down in NE. Then they pursued Larry Fitzgerald, but he was held on too tight by the Cardinals. With all the "playmaker" hype, the Eagles other moves this off-season almost seem forgotten. Asante Samuel automatically makes the Eagles Secondary the most dangerous in the NFL. The minor additions of Clemons, Klecko and Boiman shore up positions that needed some depth and veteran leadership. All in all, the off-season so far has been a very good one, a good draft, and possibly a trade for one of those "playmakers" and the Eagles will be looking at one heck of a season.

Grade: A-

Review of Grade: Samuel was the big splash that puts them in the A range no matter what. If they manage to snag Roy Williams from Detroit, as the rumors have said, then they would certainly be looking at an A+.

No talk of quitting from Eagles' Westbrook

Eagles running back Brian Westbrook does not sound as if he is planning to retire, but he also seems a lot wiser about the dangers of concussions.

One pass eclipses Manning's season

MIAMI - Peyton Manning did not intend that gift for New Orleans, no matter how much he loves his old hometown. Wow, was it ever expensive.

Ashley Fox: Brees reigns as king of New Orleans

MIAMI - It really was a calling. All of it is true. Drew Brees didn't have many options four years ago, when his throwing shoulder was in ruins and his career at a crossroads. He was through in San Diego, discarded like an old car because daddy got a new toy and his name was Philip Rivers.

The Blame Game

Phil Simms, who I thought was just okay during the Super Bowl broadcast, chimed in on NBC10 Philly yesterday regarding the Eagles neverending quarterback quandary. Now, signal callers in general normally avoid all out trashing a fellow member of the elite fraternity, so Simms’ comments about Donovan McNabb should be taken with a grain of [...]

Eagles Don’t Win Super Bowl… Again

The 2009 season is officially in the books. Congratulations to the New Orleans Saints for winning Super Bowl XLIV. And a hearty enjoy your 7-9 2010 campaign slap on the back to the Indianapolis Colts. It was a valiant effort, but Drew Brees would not be denied. Overall, I’d call it a decent game. There weren’t [...]

Canadian Invasion

The Eagles once again plucked a CFL star, if there is such a thing, from north of the border and worked him out. Defensive end Ricky Foley tied for the league lead with 12 sacks this past season. Foley could join his former Canadian teammate, running back Martell Mallett, who the Birds signed last month. If [...]

Thoughts on the Super Bowl

Last year’s Super Bowl was arguably one of the best there has been, so it’s going to be hard to follow that up. Drew Brees and Peyton Manning will do their best to put on a show but I don’t see this game being the type of game we saw last year. I [...]
