Philadelphia Eagles Free Agency Grade and Review

Contributor: Justin Harris, mvn.com/nfl-eagles

Team Needs: OL, S, WR, DE/LB, RB

Key additions: CB Asante Samuel (Patriots), DE/LB Chris Clemons (Raiders), FB Dan Klecko (Colts), LB Rocky Boiman (Colts)

Key Losses: LB Takeo Spikes, CB William James

Key Free Agents Retained: TE LJ Smith (Franchised), CB Joselio Hanson (Tendered)

Free Agency Notes: It seems every off-season there's at least one week long headline highlighting Donovan McNabb. This time it was his statement that the Eagles needed more "playmakers". For the first time, it seemed like the Eagles front office actually listened to the man who has brought them so much success. The only problem? No one is willing to give them the playmakers they want. They nearly had a lock on Randy Moss, but he decided to settle back down in NE. Then they pursued Larry Fitzgerald, but he was held on too tight by the Cardinals. With all the "playmaker" hype, the Eagles other moves this off-season almost seem forgotten. Asante Samuel automatically makes the Eagles Secondary the most dangerous in the NFL. The minor additions of Clemons, Klecko and Boiman shore up positions that needed some depth and veteran leadership. All in all, the off-season so far has been a very good one, a good draft, and possibly a trade for one of those "playmakers" and the Eagles will be looking at one heck of a season.

Grade: A-

Review of Grade: Samuel was the big splash that puts them in the A range no matter what. If they manage to snag Roy Williams from Detroit, as the rumors have said, then they would certainly be looking at an A+.

Paul Domowitch: Avant cares most about the final score

Jason Avant doesn't know what Sunday night in his hometown of Chicago will bring. It might bring another 100-yard game, like the one he had last week against the Chargers. Or it might bring a goose egg like the ones he had in Weeks 6 and 7 against the Raiders and the Redskins.

My Eagles Wish List For Sunday Night’s Game

As we reach the annual “must-win” portion of the Eagles season, I have identified a few things I’d really like to see on Sunday night, besides the obvious, which would be a win. And here they are: - An eight to ten play drive that results in a touchdown. You know, a nice mix of run and [...]

McNabb and Reid Hold Another Secret Meeting

My ITI spies have struck gold again. They got their hands on another clandestine meeting between Andy Reid and Donovan McNabb yesterday. In a desperation game for both teams, Eagles visit Chicago Sunday night….

Both the Eagles (5-4) and "'da Bears" (4-5) need this upcoming Sunday night game to maintain any realistic chances of making their respective playoff hopes. For the Bears, there is some comfort in hosting the game at Soldier Field in Chicago, knowing that the Eagles are 0-7 so far in Sunday night games on NBC. For the Eagles, the great hope is they can finally figure out a way to establish a running game early and get off to a good start against the berated Bears' defense. But that statement...

Chargers smoke Eagles, 31-23, stick a fork in the Birds, they’re done….

I hate to be so down after a tough loss.... truly, there were good things to be appreciated. Like WR Jason Avant being rediscovered in the offense as possibly the next best slot receiver to Wes Welker, with nearly 150 yards in receiving... or WR Reggie Brown showing up with some key catches throughout the game keeping it close...or Brent Celek with clutch TD reception action... or Jeremy Maclin and DeSean Jackson with some timely crossing route receptions. Donovan McNabb threw for nearly 450...

It’s Game Time: Chargers’ D-Line hopes to trap Eagles in revolving door….

The San Diego Chargers are favored by 1 to beat the Philadelphia Eagles at Qualcomm Stadium this Sunday, and one of the big reasons is the improved defensive line play of the Bolts. Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune posted a nice analysis of the changes brought to the defensive philosophy of the Chargers. Defensive coordinator Ron Rivera says the Chargers resurgence on defense starts up front --- and it goes beyond the re-emergence of the the two-headed Shawne (Merriman)/Shaun (Phillips...

McNabb to Wear a Flak Jacket the Rest of 09

Seems that QB Donovan McNabb’s rib isn’t going to be 100 percent for some time, and because of it, Fox Sports reports that the QB will wear a flak jacket for protection for the rest of the season. The rib that quarterback Donovan McNabb fractured in Week 1 still hasn’t completely [...]
