Philadelphia Eagles Free Agency Grade and Review

Contributor: Justin Harris, mvn.com/nfl-eagles

Team Needs: OL, S, WR, DE/LB, RB

Key additions: CB Asante Samuel (Patriots), DE/LB Chris Clemons (Raiders), FB Dan Klecko (Colts), LB Rocky Boiman (Colts)

Key Losses: LB Takeo Spikes, CB William James

Key Free Agents Retained: TE LJ Smith (Franchised), CB Joselio Hanson (Tendered)

Free Agency Notes: It seems every off-season there's at least one week long headline highlighting Donovan McNabb. This time it was his statement that the Eagles needed more "playmakers". For the first time, it seemed like the Eagles front office actually listened to the man who has brought them so much success. The only problem? No one is willing to give them the playmakers they want. They nearly had a lock on Randy Moss, but he decided to settle back down in NE. Then they pursued Larry Fitzgerald, but he was held on too tight by the Cardinals. With all the "playmaker" hype, the Eagles other moves this off-season almost seem forgotten. Asante Samuel automatically makes the Eagles Secondary the most dangerous in the NFL. The minor additions of Clemons, Klecko and Boiman shore up positions that needed some depth and veteran leadership. All in all, the off-season so far has been a very good one, a good draft, and possibly a trade for one of those "playmakers" and the Eagles will be looking at one heck of a season.

Grade: A-

Review of Grade: Samuel was the big splash that puts them in the A range no matter what. If they manage to snag Roy Williams from Detroit, as the rumors have said, then they would certainly be looking at an A+.

Eagles Notebook: Lots of moving around with Eagles linebacker banged up

Will Witherspoon, who has been settling in nicely as the Eagles' middle linebacker, will move to the weakside this week, assuming usual starter Akeem Jordan can't play with a knee hyperextension and bone bruise, other players said yesterday. Jordan was limping heavily in the locker room.

DeSean Jackson joining agent Rosenhaus' roster

Hugh Douglas knew his old agent, Drew Rosenhaus, was in town for the Eagles-Cowboys game last weekend, but didn't know exactly why - until yesterday, when Douglas was told about DeSean Jackson's reported agent shift from DeBartolo Sports Inc. to Rosenhaus.

Reid and McNabb Hold Secret Meeting

I don’t break many stories here at ITI, but my spies have gotten their grubby little paws on a recording of the behind closed doors meeting that occurred yesterday between Andy Reid and Donovan McNabb. The duo had plenty to discuss, including where the team stands at the midway point of the season. Here’s the transcript: Reid: [...]

Joselio Hanson Is Outta Here!!

What a day. First, the Eagles lost cornerback Ellis Hobbs for the season, and now Joselio Hanson is off the active roster for at least a month. According to Geoff Mosher of delawareonline.com, it could be a violation of the league’s substance abuse policy. That has not been confirmed by the team. Jack Iguana was elevated [...]

Eagles Place Ellis Hobbs On IR

The Eagles have placed kick returner/cornerback Ellis Hobbs on injured reserve after he suffered a severe neck injury that will require surgery. This sucks. I like Hobbs and we all saw the last two weeks how dangerous he can be as a return man. The job now falls to Quintin Demps, Jeremy Maclin and Macho [...]

Rivers vs. McNabb, Turner vs. Reid: a 2nd-Guesser’s Feast….

Who has been criticized more than Norv Turner and Andy Reid for clock-management and play-calling down the stretch of a close game? Which QB, Phil Rivers or Donovan McNabb, has been second-guessed more for failing to come up big in crunch time? Well, as fate would have it, we will now have a match-up featuring all four of "America's Most Wanted" in a prime-time football Sunday matinee. At 4:15 PM EST, Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego will host the 5-3 Philadelphia Eagles against the 5-3 San D...

Cowboys edge Eagles, 20-16…NFC East is up for grabs….

I was hoping this November Sunday night game would result in a cushion of sweet security for the Eagles as the team that finally found its NFC East identity by putting Dallas down into a 5-3 reality check. Instead, it's the Eagles (now 5-3) who are left scratching their heads and wondering what went wrong. On paper, both teams put up fairly compatible numbers: Donovan McNabb threw for 227 yards and a TD, Tony Romo threw for 307 yards and a TD, that TD being the eventual game-winning score to WR...

It’s Game Time: Eagles and Cowboys clash Sunday night for control of NFC East….

For some reason, Dallas is the team Eagles' fans get most amped to beat, even on those rare occasions when both teams are out of the race. This next game on Sunday night at 8 P.M. at the Linc in Philly, NBC's Game of the Week, will match the Eagles and Cowboys in a contest of two teams both on the upswing with identical 5-2 records. With a national audience in tow, this game is more than just a traditional rivalry, it's a game for either team to make a statement about who will assume leadership...

McNabb to Wear a Flak Jacket the Rest of 09

Seems that QB Donovan McNabb’s rib isn’t going to be 100 percent for some time, and because of it, Fox Sports reports that the QB will wear a flak jacket for protection for the rest of the season. The rib that quarterback Donovan McNabb fractured in Week 1 still hasn’t completely [...]
