Freshmen step up as Oklahoma State moves to 3-0

STILLWATER – Stat lines alone don’t tell the Saturday story for Oklahoma State freshman point guards Ray Penn and Fred Gulley.

Until you consider the numbers of North Texas’ Josh White.

The Mean Green’s leading scorer, averaging 27 points per game, and a guy who’d torched the Cowboys for a combined 48 points the past two seasons managed just four — all in the final 3 1/2 minutes.

"The freshmen won this go-round,” said OSU coach Travis Ford.

The Cowboys won, too, pulling away 82-68 before a crowd of 4,118 at Gallagher-Iba Arena.

Oklahoma State starting pitcher Anna Whiddon (16-12) gave up just one run on two hits through the first four innings when Amber Flores scored an unearned run in the top of the first on a base hit by Norris. Cowboys Improve To 3-0

Josh White of North Texas had scored 23 and 25 points in games against Oklahoma State the past two seasons. So there was a reason for Cowboy head coach Travis Ford to be concerned entering Saturday’s game against the Mean Green. But freshmen Ray Penn and Fred Gulley combined to hold White to just four points as Oklahoma State defeated North Texas 82-68 at Gallagher-Iba Arena.
