Oakland Raiders Free Agency Grade and Review

Contributor - Patrick A. Patterson, mvn.com/nfl-raiders

Team Needs - DT, WR, OT, DE, S

Key additions - CB DeAngelo Hall (Falcons), S Gibril Wilson (Giants), WR Javon Walker (Denver), T Kwame Harris (49ers), WR Drew Carter (Panthers), DT William Joseph (Giants)

Key Losses - DE Chris Clemons, DE Tyler Brayton, WR Jerry Porter, QB Josh McCown

Key Free Agents Retained - CB Nnamdi Asomugha (Franchised), RB Justin Fargas, DT Tommy Kelly

Free Agency Notes - The Raiders hit the ground running with the addition of Gibril Wilson the first day, and have been aggressively pursuing players in position of need. The rumored (At press time) acquisition of CB DeAngelo Hall from Atlanta is not a move at a need position, but a move that would give the Raiders an elite cornerback tandem. The Raiders still have yet to address their defensive line in a meaningful way after losing pass rush specialist Chris Clemons to Philly. The Raiders should be looking to add at least one more defensive end and a big space eating nose tackle. The Raiders added Kwame Harris hoping that their offensive line guru Tom Cable can help resurrect his career the way he has done with Gallery.

Grade - C+

Review of Grade - The buzz around the league is that the Raiders have overpaid their free agent acquisitions. Honestly, they may have, but if the Raiders turn in 8 or 9 wins and snap out of this funk it will have been worth every penny. If the Raiders address their defensive line in a meaningful way and possibly an offensive tackle with the draft and/or later in free agency this grade will increase significantly.

Mum is Cable's word

Raiders coach Tom Cable knows who his starting running back and wide receivers are. He just isn't telling. The reason? These are the all too familiar Chiefs coming to town Sunday. If the Raiders can keep them guessing who to prepare for, then make them guess. Maybe Darren McFadden will start...

Now starting at WR ...

Don't ask Raiders coach Tom Cable. He still hasn't decided who will start at wide receiver with Chaz Schilens back. Frankly, Cable doesn't think it matters. He has every intention of playing all three receivers on a rotational base, so don't bother asking him to name two starters for Sunday's...

Most hands on deck

The Raiders' offense is back to full strength, or close enough to it, after a bye week. Left guard Robert Gallery (leg) and wide receiver Chaz Schilens (foot) were a full go Monday. Right tackle Cornell Green (calf) and running back Darren McFadden (knee) were limited. All practiced together...

It’s a must, all right

Quarterback JaMarcus Russell used the phrase “must win” in conjunction with Sunday’s game against the Chiefs at the Coliseum. It’s a term most often utilized for teams in a playoff context, as in, must win to stay alive for a chance to play in the postseason. Unless you’re as optimistic as cornerback Chris Johnson, who invoked the [...]

Cable mum on deployment at RB, WR

News and notes from Friday’s practice as the Raiders prepare to host the Kansas City Chiefs at the Coliseum: – Raiders coach Tom Cable predictably played it close to the vest regarding the use of wide receiver Chaz Schilens and running back Darren McFadden. Schilens missed the entire first half the season with a broken fifth metatarsal [...]

Ellis on field

Defensive end Greg Ellis was wearing his helmet and joining his teammates on the defensive line as team sessions began Friday. The defensive line didn’t go through any actual drills as special teams worked on kickoff and punt returns, instead meeting as a group with line coach Dwaine Board, shooting the bull and at one point [...]
