Notre Dame Fighting Irish

PITTSBURGH--No defense for this one. It was ugly. If saving Notre Dame's football season was determined to be the rallying cry Saturday night at Pittsburgh, the Irish defense missed that meeting.

PITTSBURGH - This time, there was nothing to second-guess, nothing to what-if about, nothing that Notre Dame head football coach Charlie Weis could spin as pseudo-progress.

PITTSBURGH - It's one thing when the media badgers Golden Tate - at it has quarterback Jimmy Clausen - about whether he's ready to go three-and-out and jump into the NFL Draft a year early.

Jonathan Baldwin made two exceptional catches that allowed No. 8 Pittsburgh to open up an 18-point lead in the fourth quarter before Notre Dame rallied behind two touchdowns by star Golden Tate, and the Panthers held on for a 27-22 victory Saturday night.

For the first 10 games of the 2009-10 season, scoring goals has been a struggle for Notre Dame as the Irish averaged just 2.30 goals-per-game. Despite out shooting Northern Michigan on Saturday night at the Joyce Center, 38-18, the Irish scored just twice to fall to the Wildcats, 3-2 in front of a sell out crowd of 2,721.

With one of its deepest teams in years, and one of the more productive off-seasons in recent memory, No. 4/7 Notre Dame opens the 2009-10 campaign on Sunday with a 7 p.m. (ET) matchup against Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the first regular season women's basketball game at the newly-remodeled Purcell Pavilion.
