East Carolina even knew it was coming, and the Pirates couldn't stop it.

Freshman Erik Highsmith nabbed six passes for 113 yards and a touchdown in UNC's 31-17 win over visiting East Carolina. For the first time since 1997, the Heels are off to a 3-0 start.

With a 3-2 win over second-ranked Virginia Friday, the North Carolina field hockey team advanced to the NCAA championship game for the 12th time in school history and will meet top-ranked and undefeated Maryland on Sunday for the national title. The game is set for noon at Wake Forest's Kentner Stadium and will be televised live by the CBS College Sports Network. The third-ranked Tar Heels have won five NCAA titles, most recently in 2007.

North Carolina (2-0) hits the road for the first time in 2009-10 when the Tar Heels travel to Las Vegas, Nev., to face UNLV Sunday afternoon at 2 PST at the Cox Pavilion. The game will serve as a homecoming for UNC junior guard Italee Lucas, a native of Las Vegas and a graduate of Centennial High School. Carolina defeated Coastal Carolina, 88-49, at home on Wednesday. UNLV (2-1) is coming off a 97-92 overtime win at Sacramento State on Thursday. Carolina is ranked No. 4 in both the AP poll and the coaches' poll. UNLV is unranked.
