Minnesota Vikings Free Agency Grade and Review

Contributor: Ryan Rust, mvn.com/nfl-vikings

Team Needs: WR, DE, QB, S

Key additions: Madieu Williams (S - Bengals), Bernard Berrian (WR - Bears), Thomas Tapeh (FB - Eagles)

Key Losses: Tony Richardson (FB), Dwight Smith (S), Mewelde Moore (RB)

Key Free Agents Retained: Robert Ferguson (WR), Heath Farwell (LB)

Free Agency Notes: The Vikings made a splash early in the free agency by acquiring both Madieu Williams and Bernard Berrian. Both Williams and Berrian bolster weaknesses in the Vikings roster and are quality additions. (Even if the Vikings did overpay, slightly.) Tapeh provides a suitable replacement for the departed Tony Richardson. The Vikings also made a wise decision to re-sign Heath Farwell, a cornerstone of their special teams packages. Since they failed to address DE through free agency, look for the Vikings to draft DE early again this season.

Grade: B-

In limbo again with Vikes, Rosenfels tries to remain upbeat

Sage Rosenfels is the guy who took the early lead in Minnesota's quarterback competition last summer with a strong performance in the first preseason game. Then came Brett Favre.

Peyton Manning Knows How Brett Favre Feels

No one can say the New Orleans Saints had an easy road to the championship.  Just look at the quarterbacks they had to defeat along the way: Kurt Warner, Hall-of-Famer.  Brett Favre, Hall-of-Famer.  Peyton Manning, Hall-of-Famer. The Saints beat Warner and Favre by mercilessly pounding them, sending Warner into retirement and Favre into a bruise-covered limbo.  Peyton [...]

John Randle is a Hall of Famer; Cris Carter is Not

For the second straight year, a great Viking of the 1990s will join the immortals in Canton. Last year it was stalwart guard Randall McDaniel.  This year it is high-energy defensive lineman John Randle. Randle becomes the third Viking defensive lineman enshrined in the Hall-of-Fame, following famed Purple People Eaters Carl Eller and Alan Page. He enters the [...]

Links Of The Week

Just because it is the offseason doesn’t mean us bloggers have nothing to talk about.  Here is this week’s look around the web: John Randle getting into the Hall of Fame was great, but what about Cris Carter? Randle changed the game and had fun doing it. Some chatter about safeties being limited in the Cover-2 defense and [...]

Big Pat Thought To Be Coming Back

Defensive Tackle is thought to be one of the Vikings top offseason priorities because of the likelihood that Pat Williams will retire soon, and because Fred Evans and Jimmy Kennedy are both at the end of their contracts. However, just as I was starting to say to myself that Pat Williams would have announced his retirement [...]
