Miami Dolphins Free Agency Grade and Review

Contributor: Sean Fowler, mvn.com/nfl-dolphins

Team Needs: Nearly every position

Key additions: LB Reggie Torbor, OG Justin Smiley, DT Jason Ferguson

Key Losses: LB Zach Thomas (Cowboys), WR Marty Booker (Bears)

Key Free Agents Retained: CB Michael Lehan, S Yeremiah Bell

Free Agency Notes: A new regime has taken over in Miami, and it SHOWS. The triplicate powers of VP Bill Parcells, GM Jeff Ireland and Head Coach Tony Sparano swept through the Dolphins old and talent-deprived roster, cutting 10 players. The moves freed even more salary cap space and shed some dead weight from the team. It hurt losing a franchise veteran like Zach Thomas, but they keys to this offseason was getting the program started. The Dolphins will not truly compete in this decade, so it was as much a favor to Zach as it was to the Dolphins. Guard Justin Smiley is the class of this crop, a big anchor for a line that has struggled and may have been in for a slight dropoff with the departure of O-Line guru Hudson Houck.

Grade: B+

Review of Grade: The Dolphins could have gone for a big splash with the cap space they had. But that's not the way the Parcells Posse rolls. The Dolphins will be built from the ground up. The moves made were foundational...solid backups and special teams players. The Phins will be built through the draft with little splashes in free agency here and there.

Miami Dolphins' Joey Porter, Randy Starks prove to be pain to Carolina Panthers

It's not about him, it's about the team, Joey Porter insisted this week. On Thursday night, at key points in the game, it was about Porter and Randy Starks because what they did was about the Dolphins stuffing Carolina's offense.

The Question of Ronnie Brown

This is going to be debated for the next few months so I figured I may as well kick off the discussion right here and now while we have a full ten days to kick it around… What are the Miami Dolphins going to do about Ronnie Brown? Ronnie Brown has played his last snap for [...]

Thoughts From the Morning After

Funny what a week can do. Just last Saturday the Miami Dolphins were 3-5 and beginning to lose relevance.  Now six days later they find themselves at 5-5, .500 for the first time since week one and a team still very much in the hunt for a playoff spot. Last night Miami pulled off a [...]

Phins Find Way Back To .500

7 Yankees were protected from the Rule 5 network today: Austin Jackson-OF Hector Noesi-RHP Ivan Nova-RHP Romulo Sanchez-RHP Reegie Corona-IF Eduardo Nunez-IF Kevin Russo-IF Apparently the Yankees dropped Shelly Duncan to AAA so they’ll have some time to work out a move for him with someone. This gives the Yankees 39 filled spots on the 40 man roster. So naturally this will start plenty [...]

Williams Goes for Three TD’s as Dolphins Top Panthers 24-17

The Dolphins were hoping Thursday night for a prime time effort from running back Ricky Williams, taking the place of the injured Ronnie Brown. They got more than they probably thought they would from their back, as Williams scored three times and rushed for 119 yards as the Dolphins moved to 5-5 with a 24-17 [...]

Late Carpenter Field Goal Pushes Dolphins Past Buccaneers 25-22

Sunday found a Florida matchup, courtesy of a quirk of sorts in the NFL scheduling, between the Miami Dolphins and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. At first glance, you might think that there wouldn’t be very much scoring; if you subscribed to that line of thinking, then surprisingly, you’d be wrong. Actually there were the obligatory lead [...]
