The annual Veterans Day program, which featured 81 local veterans as guests, went off without a hitch Tuesday at Alachua Elementary School, except for a strong wind that threatened to topple a large American flag on the stage.

Five Columbia County teenagers have been charged with two school burglaries that occurred over the past weekend, in which the suspects stole computers, cash, musical instruments and other items from the schools.

Mike Gillislee, who is one of those tough guys Urban Meyer likes to talk about whenever the subject of special teams comes up, is good for about eight plays a game, each one lasting about 10 to 12 seconds. His job is to sprint down under kickoffs, find a hole in the wedge and either make the tackle or alter the course of the returner. Gillislee’s kamikaze existence might go unappreciated by the typical Florida fan but the one person who counts the most takes notice. Meyer knows the Gators don’t win the field position battle if he doesn’t have a tough guy like Gillislee turning into the human equivalent of a missile those seven or eight times a game.

Fans are invited to watch the Florida Gator football game versus South Carolina this Saturday at 3:30 PM in the Stephen C. O'Connell Center. The football game viewing is part of a unique doubleheader as the Gator Women's Basketball team opens its regular season against Stetson at 1 PM.
