Denver Broncos Free Agency Grade and Review

Contributor: Nick Korte, mvn.com/nfl-broncos

Team Needs: DT, OT, S, K, P

Key additions: LB Boss Bailey, LB Niko Koutouvides, WR Keary Colbert, S Marlon McCree, S Marquand Manuel

Key Losses: K Jason Elam, WR Javon Walker, LB Ian Gold, OG/OC Chris Myers, S Nick Ferguson

Key Free Agents Retained: FB Cecil Sapp, DE Ebenezer Ekuban

Free Agency Notes: After making big splashes in free agency in 2007 with the likes of Daniel Graham and Travis Henry, the Broncos have tightened the purse strings in 2008 and pursued players that they hope can have as much of an impact with greater relief on the budget. This is especially true at linebacker, where the signings of Koutouvides and the younger brother of Champ Bailey will be a frugal attempt to return the middle of the defense near to standards set by names such as Wilson, Mobley, or Romanowski. Colbert should be a good compliment to Brandon Stokley as a secondary receiver to Brandon Marshall's hopeful ascent to elite status, while the safety position was stopgapped for one more year with the arrivals of McCree and Manuel.

Grade: B+

Review of Grade: Given the new spending habits of the Broncos, they have made good strides in what resources they have limited themselves to using. They have also positioned themselves for proper usage of draft picks--tackles on the first day, both offensive and defensive; and a mission to greatly improve special teams, highlighted by the loss of the great Jason Elam.

Champs enjoy Sainthood

Clearly exhausted from a late night of post-Super Bowl celebrations, New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton leaned on a podium Monday morning, clutching the Vince Lombardi Trophy in his right hand.

Some think little of Broncos' Floyd

Lunch Special: Not everybody believes Floyd Little is Canton-worthy. Count Kansas City Star columnist Jason Whitlock as one of them. Also, readers chime in on Manning vs. Elway. And the Rockies want more consistency out of Ian Stewart.

Sunday's Super Bowl sets viewing record

The Super Bowl was watched by more than 106 million people, surpassing the 1983 finale of "M-A-S-H" to become the most-watched program in television history.

SB lesson No. 3: Make bold coaching decisions

FORT LAUDERDALE — Press boxes (even auxillary ones) are cheer-free zones. But when a coach makes a crazy, gutsy call, it’s only natural to gasp. That was the case for plenty of us media types at the start of the second half last night when Saints coach Sean Payton made the bold decision to onside kick [...]

SB lesson No. 2: Be strong inside

FORT LAUDERDALE — The Saints offensive line last week were honored as being the best unit in the leauge, winning the Madden Most Valuable Protector award here at the Super Bowl media center. While tackles Jon Stinchcomb and Jermon Bushrod have certainly played well, it is really on the interior of that offensive line where the [...]

SB lesson No. 1: QB must be accurate

FORT LAUDERDALE — Surely most of the Broncos were home watching Super Bowl 44, just like the rest of you were. So here’s hoping they learned some lessons from the way the Saints were able to win their first-ever Super Bowl title. We’ll be checking in throughout the day with a couple of key things the [...]

LEGWOLD: Broncos have plenty of holes to fill on defense, special teams

At almost every opportunity to throw the Broncos defense of 2008 under any passing Greyhound, first-year Broncos coach Josh McDaniels has instead offered something on the order of: "We want to make the whole team better."

NFL free agency: Weak economic climate not conducive to big deals

If new Denver Broncos coach Josh McDaniels is to be believed, the team won't be shy about spending owner Pat Bowlen's money in hopes of building a roster for the franchise's first playoff appearance since 2005.

Da Saints Done Won Da Super Bowl

As football fans, we’ve been very lucky. The past few Super Bowls have been so close and competitive that it almost makes you forget that your team isn’t playing in the big game. Historically, it was the $2.6 million commercials that got most of the attention as the game was a time to grab a beer from the [...]

Floyd Little Gets The Call To The Hall

As you’ve heard, Floyd Little got the call, but Shannon Sharpe will have to wait another year. With Jerry Rice and Emmitt Smith being automatics this year, I wasn’t too surprised Sharpe didn’t get in. I’m not worried about Sharpe. He’ll get in. Congratulations to Little, however, for all of his football accomplishments. Floyd Little played for [...]

Hall Of Fame Selection Process Skewed

It’s a big football weekend to say the least. The Hall of Fame class of 2010 will be decided today, and the final game of the season will be played tomorrow. Broncos alums Floyd Little and Shannon Sharpe are finalists for this year’s class and both deserve to be members of the elite group. John Elway and Gary Zimmerman [...]
