Denver Broncos Free Agency Grade and Review

Contributor: Nick Korte, mvn.com/nfl-broncos

Team Needs: DT, OT, S, K, P

Key additions: LB Boss Bailey, LB Niko Koutouvides, WR Keary Colbert, S Marlon McCree, S Marquand Manuel

Key Losses: K Jason Elam, WR Javon Walker, LB Ian Gold, OG/OC Chris Myers, S Nick Ferguson

Key Free Agents Retained: FB Cecil Sapp, DE Ebenezer Ekuban

Free Agency Notes: After making big splashes in free agency in 2007 with the likes of Daniel Graham and Travis Henry, the Broncos have tightened the purse strings in 2008 and pursued players that they hope can have as much of an impact with greater relief on the budget. This is especially true at linebacker, where the signings of Koutouvides and the younger brother of Champ Bailey will be a frugal attempt to return the middle of the defense near to standards set by names such as Wilson, Mobley, or Romanowski. Colbert should be a good compliment to Brandon Stokley as a secondary receiver to Brandon Marshall's hopeful ascent to elite status, while the safety position was stopgapped for one more year with the arrivals of McCree and Manuel.

Grade: B+

Review of Grade: Given the new spending habits of the Broncos, they have made good strides in what resources they have limited themselves to using. They have also positioned themselves for proper usage of draft picks--tackles on the first day, both offensive and defensive; and a mission to greatly improve special teams, highlighted by the loss of the great Jason Elam.

Broncos make o-line change

The longest-tenured Bronco has been bumped from the starting lineup. Ben Hamilton, who has been with team since he was drafted in 2001, has been replaced at left guard by Russ Hochstein, who was acquired in August in a trade with New England. Hochstein was with the first-team during the portion of Wednesday’s practice that was [...]

Redskins-Broncos: Tale of two offseason strategies

With the Broncos playing the Redskins this Sunday at FedEx field in Landover, Md., it’s perhaps appropriate to reflect on how the teams went about building their rosters during the offseason. Within the first weekend of free agency, the Washington Redskins gave $41 million in guaranteed money to one player, defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth, while the [...]

Broncos fullback/tailback Peyton Hillis is back in Denver after returning home to Arkansas following the sudden death of his maternal grandmother late last week. Hillis said he was extremely close his grandmother, Margaret Ann Justice, and missed Monday’s game against Pittsburgh to attend her funeral, which was held Tuesday. Hillis was a pallbearer at the ceremony. [...]

Running backs taking a look at Broncos

The Broncos jumped into free agency Thursday night by setting up visits today with a pair of running backs. The team, as yet, hasn't reached agreements with Arizona's J.J. Arrington or Philadelphia's Correll Buckhalter, according to John Rickert, who represents both players.

LEGWOLD: Broncos have plenty of holes to fill on defense, special teams

At almost every opportunity to throw the Broncos defense of 2008 under any passing Greyhound, first-year Broncos coach Josh McDaniels has instead offered something on the order of: "We want to make the whole team better."

NFL free agency: Weak economic climate not conducive to big deals

If new Denver Broncos coach Josh McDaniels is to be believed, the team won't be shy about spending owner Pat Bowlen's money in hopes of building a roster for the franchise's first playoff appearance since 2005.

Broncos Links

It’s link dump day, so let’s get it started. Broncos: Could the Broncos have a tough time against the Redskins defense? Woody Paige always stirs the pot. In case you haven’t read his two latest posts, here’s “Whose Stadium is this, anyway“, and “Give Chris Simms the start at QB vs. Redskins.” Former Bronco, Clinton Portis, is very doubtful [...]

Exclusive Interview With Former Bronco Karl Mecklenburg

I was recently lucky enough to have the chance to speak with former Broncos linebacker, Karl Mecklenburg. Mecklenburg played 12 hard-nosed seasons with the Broncos after being selected in the 12th round of the 1983 draft. You wouldn’t guess that he played JV football in his junior year of high school, and then went to a [...]

Why Being A Broncos Fan Is Better Than Being A Redskins Fan

As if their season couldn’t get any worse, I’ve got 10 good reasons. 1. The only bright spot for the Skins’ this season? Chris Cooley’s bleached hair. 2. Head coach Jim Zorn will spend the next year dusting shame off of his resume. 3. The Skins’ may outwork the members of Congress, but all they’ve got to show for [...]
