Cleveland Browns Free Agency Grade and Review

Contributor: Michael Beckwith, mvn.com/nfl-browns

Team Needs: NT, DE, OLB, ILB, WR

Key additions: NT Shaun Rogers (Lions), DE Corey Williams (Packers), WR Donte` Stallworth (Patriots), G Red Hadnot (Dolphins), Shantee Orr (Jaguars)

Key Losses: LB Chaun Thompson (Texans), CB Leigh Bodden (Lions)

Key Free Agents Retained: QB Derek Anderson, RB Jamal Lewis

Free Agency Notes: Heading into free agency the Browns had a list of priorities: retain Derek Anderson and Jamal Lewis as well as add bodies to to a defensive line that contributed to a defense that allowed 4.5 yards per carry against the run. Once again, GM Phil Savage was one of the league's most agressive on the open market as he re-signed Anderson and traded for a pair of d-linemen in Corey Williams and Shaun Rogers in the opening weekend. Signing Donte Stallworth will provide a boost to a strong passing game as it allows aging veteran Joe Jurevicius to move to the third WR on the depth chart. Guard Rex Hadnot started all 16 games at Miami last year and will provide depth at multiple positions on the line. Shantee Orr isn't expected to provide anything but special teams help.

Grade: A

Review of Grade: GM Phil Savage put the same kind of focus into fixing the defensive line this off-season as he had in the terrific job he did on the offensive line over the past couple seasons. Both lineman, however, were acquired through trades due to lack of quality linemen on the free agent market. Due to these moves (along with last year's Brady Quinn deal for the '08 #1) the Browns won't have a pick until the 4th round. The Browns will likely enter training camp as the division favorite.

Camp quandry

When the Browns open training camp Wednesday, there will be one notable absence. A quarterback controversy.

Pat's Beside the Point - Worse for wear

Jake Westbrook said he knew something was wrong last year. He found a way to keep starting games, but there were problems in his elbow . . . pain . . . irritation . . . more pain. Those problems peaked in May, when Westbrook learned the constant wear and tear had done in his ulnar collateral ligament.

Jurevicius on the bench

Browns No. 3 receiver Joe Jurevicius likely will miss the first five games of the regular season after undergoing the fourth procedure on his right knee since January, General Manager Phil Savage said Thursday.

What had long been a weakness became a strength for the Browns last fall.

Position preview: Running back

Those expecting to see an old Jamal Lewis in 2007 instead got a glimpse of the old Jamal Lewis.

Position preview: Defensive line

The Browns set out to address the defensive line in the offseason, and just 24 hours into the league's player movement period they did more than just about anyone thought possible.

PUP List For Jurevicius

With the recent revaluations that Joe Jurevicius’s June 30th surgery will take longer to heal than originally believed, it looks as if the 11 year vet will start out the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list.  Meaning that Jurevicius could be available for the week 7 match-up at Washington. This now opens the door [...]

One of the new additions to the Browns, wide receiver Donte’ Stallworth, recently said that he turned down more money from a noncontender this past off-season.  He also said he jokes around with former teammate Randy Moss that “the road to the Super Bowl goes through Cleveland.”  Whether or not that is the case, it [...]
