Cincinnati Bengals Free Agency Grade and Review

Contributor: Chris Maier, mvn.com/nfl-bengals

Team Needs: DT, LB, S, C, WR (depth/youth)

Key additions: DE Antwan Odom (Tennessee), TE Ben Utecht (Indianapolis), LB Daryl Blackstock (Arizona)

Key Losses: DE Justin Smith, LB Landon Johnson, S Madieu Williams

Key Free Agents Retained: T Stacy Andrews, LB Dhani Jones, P Kyle Larson

Free Agency Notes: The Bengals promised changes this off-season but most off the changes have come in the free agent defection category. The team made a strong statement about its desire to upgrade the DT position by attempting to trade for Shaun Rogers (Detroit) and Dwayne Robertson (NYJets) but both deals feel through. The signings of DE Antwan Odom and TE Ben Utecht fill needs with players with upside. Both signings come with risk as neither player has been an established starter. The loss of J.Smith, L.Johnson and M.Williams leave big holes in an already porous Bengal defense. At this point, it appears the team is counting on the draft to fix these holes.

Grade: D+

Review of Grade: While the signing of Utecht and Odom are ok, they come with considerable risk. Having lost three starters on defense, the team needed to be more aggressive. The team also has not found the locker room leader the team desperately needs.

Benson gametime decision

The fifth-year running back, who is officially listed as doubtful on the injury report, has not practiced all week and was in sweatpants and a hoody during today's practice.

Bengals chat at 12:30 p.m.

Enquirer Bengals beat writer Joe Reedy will be on board at 12:30 p.m. today to take any questions or comments you have about the team, which travels to Oakland this Sunday to face the Raiders.

Benson unlikely to play Sunday

Running back Cedric Benson did not practice for a second straight day and is unlikely to play Sunday. That means Larry Johnson's timetable to be comfortable with the playbook is accelerated.

Week Eleven Preview: Cincinnati at Oakland

It seems too easy to pile on Al Davis and the Oakland Raider Asylum; that bit has done before, so we’ll just skip it altogether. Instead, the focus this week for the Bengals is preparing for the best thing the Raiders have going for them: their location. Every week it seems [...]

Benson Not Expected To Play vs. Raiders

It is looking very unlikely that Cincinnati Bengals running back Cedric Benson will suit up Sunday against the Oakland Raiders after missing practice again due to a hip injury. Assuming that is the case, recently signed RB Larry Johnson should see an increased workload.

Meet The New Boss

There is a luxury suite on the top floor that overlooks the AFC North. It’s shiny and comfortable and smells like the Playoffs. After milling about their new digs for a while, the Bengals put their feet up on the glass table, lean back and smile to themselves. This is [...]

It's Great to be a Bengal's Fan

I was right . . . again!  The Bengals are 4-1 and first in the AFC North.  Cincinnati beat the odds by three with a score of 17-14 against the Ravens.  Carson Palmer, Cedric Benson, the defense, Chad Ochocinco, Andre Caldwell and Chris Henry were all game changers.

Palmer played a lot better this week.  He had 18 completions for 31 passes with 271 yards and a touchdown in the last 20 seconds of the game.  Palmer and the coaches need to work on watching the play clock.  He had too many delay of game calls and hurt the offense with a 5 yard penalty each time.

Benson has had an amazing year.  He had 120 yards against the Raven's defense.  It has been 39 games since Baltimore's defense has let a running back have 100 yards in a game.  Benson has really stepped up his game this year.

Cincinnati has an alive, quick, mean defense.  The Bengal's defense held the Ravens, who were rated #3 in the NFL, to only 14 points.  One of those touchdowns was actually scored by Baltimore's defense.  Cincinnati's defense really stuck it out and played with heart.  The Bengals won the game for defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer because his wife died last week.

Caldwell, Ochocinco and Henry  are doing great things on the field.  Caldwell has been catching clutch passes.  He caught the game winning ball against the Steelers and the Ravens.  #85 got his hands back in Baltimore and actually caught the ball even when contact was made.  Henry should have the ball thrown to him way more often.  He is a fast receiver who catches almost everything.  He had 3 catches for 92 yards in this one game.

What is with Ray Lewis actually trying to hurt Ochocinco?  The announcers said Ochocinco and Lewis pray together every Sunday on the phone.  Lewis's hit was stupid and caused a 15 yard penalty that hurt his team badly on the last drive.

The Bengals are beating the odds. They are 4-1 after a 3-12-1 season last year.  It's a great year to be a Bengal's fan.  Go Bengals!  WHO DEY!

The Bengals CAN Beat the Ravens

If the Bengals play their game on Sunday they will squeeze out a win in Baltimore.  The defense, Carson Palmer, and Cedric Benson can all be huge game changers.

The Bengal's defense is on a roll.  The Ravens are a good pass and run offense but when they do pass the Bengals will need to put pressure Joe Flacco to make him throw rushed passes.  The Bengals should be able to handle Willis McGahee running the ball.

The Ravens have a big pass defense but they are older and slower than they used to be and Palmer can handle them.  When Palmer hits the wide receivers in stride they will make the catches and do what they do.

It's going to be Benson's job to wear out Baltimore's defense early in the game.  Benson is going to need to run the ball hard against Ray Lewis but he should be able to get some break-away runs.

If everything goes right the Bengals can beat the Ravens.  Don't be afraid to send me your comments about what you think is going to happen on Sunday.  Go Bengals!  Who Dey!

The Bengals are 3-1!

The Bengals defeated the Browns in Cleveland in the last seven seconds of overtime.  Carson Palmer, Chad Ochocinco and the defense were all factors in the game.  But who could forget the offensive line?

Palmer played OK but it was not his best game.  He did throw two touchdown passes and had 230 total yards.  Palmer kept throwing passes out of bounds and too low.  I hope he does a lot better against the Ravens.  Baltimore's defense will pick off those bad passes for sure.  And once the Ravens offense gets out on the field they will take control!

Ochocinco caught the ball three times for 24 yards and had two touchdowns.  #85 should have caught way more balls.  And he should stop complaining about pass interference and CATCH THE BALL!

The defense stayed out on the field more than half the game.  Chris Jennings stripped a great ball.  Robert Gaethers caught the ball and took it in for a touchdown.  Jonathan Joseph picked one in the end zone and took it back 23 yards.  The Bengals defense has improved greatly from last season.

The O-line did an awesome job protecting the Palmer and the running backs.  The Browns only had two sacks the whole four quarters and overtime.  The line is giving Palmer plenty of time to make plays and the backs broke lose for some nice long runs.

The Bengals should have dominated the Browns but at least they ended up with a win.  They have a lot to work on for the Ravens game.  I hope the Bengals are 4-1 by next Monday.

Cedric Benson Likely Out Sunday

Who didn’t see that coming, eh? From the moment word broke that the Cincinnati Bengals were sniffing around RB Larry Johnson, experienced Bengals fans knew Cedric Benson’s allegedly minor hip injury wasn’t so minor after all. That isn’t to say that Benson is done or anything, but clearly it was expected he’d need some time. [...]

Bengals Fourth in Power Rankings–and I Don’t Get It

Recently, I’ve noticed something very strange that I haven’t seen since 2005.  The Cincinnati Bengals are now ranked number four in every power ranking on the internet.  ESPN.  Sports Illustrated.  Fox.  The national media is now doing back-flips and cartwheels crowding our bandwagon. None of that ultimately matters to me as long as the team keeps [...]

Cuddle Bowl II

Ahead of their game against the Bengals, the Oakland Raiders head coach Tom Cable owner Al “Nosferatu” Davis has benched the ineffective JaMarcus Russell in favor of backup Bruce Gradkowski. Bengals fans will remember their last encounter with Gradkowski, when DE Justin Smith’s failure to put a mattress and pillow beneath the then-Tampa Bay QB before [...]
