Chicago Bears Free Agency Grade and Review

Contributor: Mike Montgomery, mvn.com/nfl-bears

Team Needs: OL, QB, RB, S

Key additions: WR Marty Booker (Miami), WR Brandon Lloyd (Washington)

Key Losses: Bernard Berrian (Minnesota), Mushin Muhammad (Carolina), LB Brendon Ayanbadejo (Baltimore), QB Brian Griese (Tampa Bay)

Key Free Agents Retained: LB Lance Briggs (Resigned), QB Kyle Orton (Resigned), S Brandon McGowan (Resigned)

Free Agency Notes: The Bears seem to be removing what talent they have to streak down the sidelines with equally as old Veterans (Muhammad for Booker) and less promising talent (Berrian for Lloyd). Also, while we have nothing to be proud of at the quarterback position, the retention of Orton gives us time to ease in a new quarterback. Also, the resigning of Lance Briggs brings more stability to the a defense that has the potential to flick the switch and become dominant once again. The Bears biggest problem aside from the quarterback problem is that they need to address the problems with their aging offensive line, as well as the runningback spot. Cedric Benson simply can't last the whole season and Adrian Peterson simply just isn't an every down back.

Grade: C

Review of Grade: With no offensive line moves made the far, the only real highlight is the retention of Briggs. No new big playmakers have been added to the squad, and it looks like the Bears will rely heavily on their 11 draft picks in '08.

Urlacher sought leniency for 'father figure' Vrdolyak

He was a longtime political insider, but former Chicago Ald. Ed Vrdolyak apparently forged some close ties to Bears players, too.

Bears can't figure out what's going wrong

The Bears talked a lot about finding out what kind of team they are in November, when the NFL season takes a turn toward the serious, and what they've discovered is pretty grisly.

BEARS IN BRIEF: Penalties starting to haunt Bears

Bears coach Lovie Smith keeps saying the Bears are not accustomed to the penalties they have been receiving, but at some point, he's going to have to admit it's an issue.

Correcting mistakes will be primary focus for Bears offense

photo
LAKE FOREST, Ill. – It's fitting that Jay Cutler often wears Crocs to his post-game press conferences. After all, the Bears offense shot itself in the foot so frequently Thursday night in San Francisco that everyone involved probably should wear shoes with holes in them.

Interceptions continuing to mount for struggling Cutler

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – One clue that something has gone terribly wrong is when your franchise quarterback opens his post-game press conference by apologizing to his defensive teammates.

Defense takes no comfort in improved performance

SAN FRANCISCO – Although Thursday night's performance was a monumental improvement over their previous outing, members of the Bears defense weren't patting themselves on the back following a disheartening 10-6 defeat to the San Francisco 49ers.

Bart’s Best – Week 10 Top Plays

(Cue the music)  “Mama said they’ll be weeks like this, they’ll be weeks like this Mama said (Mama said, Mama said).”  Ouch!  Okay, no more picking 5 games (last week – 1-4).  I knew last week when I did that there was an uneasy vibe in the air.  A couple of thoughts:  Bears are bad [...]

Jay Cutler fined $20k for “abusive conduct”

The NFL has been re-stocking their coffers, doling out some juicy fines over the last few days. Chad Ochocinco’s $1 bribe to an official cost him $20,000 more.  Tommie Harris dropping a Deuce (Litui)?  $7500. Just to add a little insult to injury, Jay Cutler has been fined $20k for “abusive conduct” toward the referee in [...]
